In the November issue of Provider magazine, Joanne Kaldy writes of the changes in attitude that are occurring in the field of person-centered care in an article titled “Providers Find Ways To Enable Choice.” Her informative article captures the essence of this big paradigm shift. She makes many excellent points, such as:
- Residents have the right to choose; it’s important to balance safety with a person’s quality of life.
- The best way to find that balance is through communication and listening.
- More attention needs to be paid to the upside of risk. That might sound funny, but there is always some risk in life (every time you get in a car, take a shower, eat pretzels, there is some risk involved). But sometimes the benefits outweigh the possible risks. (more…)
